So far...

I have the day off tomorrow. I am so stoked about that. I've been working what feels like a full time load, but I'm only casual. But it's OK. The money should be good and it's only until the new 2IC starts. I'm actually very terrible at my job but I'm the only one with full availability so my manager has had no choice but to have me work every day.

I'm really excited about tomorrow. I'll be having some food with Susie after she finishes class and then I'm gonna meet up with Liam after he finishes work and we're going to suss out some more food. He recently bought one of those Entertainment coupon books and he hasn't used a single coupon so I think tomorrow is time to do that. With that said, anyone recommend any places for us to eat at?

Anyway, so right now I'm enjoying my evening with a bag of Doritos (The 'Hot Mexican Salsa' flavour is Uh-Mazing) and a bag of sour gummy worms. I'm really letting loose tonight. I'm probably gonna make myself several gin and tonics to celebrate my day off tomorrow. Man, I wish I had some of that Swedish cider. I hate how bars char $13 a bottle. Just ridiculous.

On a different topic, I've been really into big earrings, especially art deco style earrings. Well, I don't know if they are "art deco" but they're what I think of when someone says "art deco". Anyway, ASOS have some amazing ones at the moment! Oh and I also bought some shoes and a dress from ASOS last night.

Here are some of the earrings I want to buy.

Online shopping roolz. Just saying.

Online shopping is a god send. I don't think I would have as much of a good time on the internet if I couldn't actively buy things from it. Asos is my favourite at the moment, but I browse Etsy, Forever 21, H&M, Urban Outfitters and Topshop on a frequent basis. It's the best feeling when you go online and purchase something you probably can't buy here, or something amazing at a really low price. Shops like The Book Depository are great because they offer great discounts as well as free shipping. I think being in Australia, free or very cheap shipping makes buying online so much more appealing.

So recently, Premier Investments have decided to close down about 50 of their stores. They're the people who own Dotti, Peter Alexander, Smiggle, Portmans, Jay Jays and Just Jeans. They're closing these shops down because they are not making enough money and the chief executive of Premier Investments blames online shopping for the plummet in sales because consumers pay no tax when they spend under $1000 online.

All righty, then.

No one I know shops to avoid the tax. I didn't even know we weren't paying tax when we buy online. And why are the employees being sacked because retailers aren’t making eough money? Maybe retailers should have a hard look at WHY their business aren't making enough. The fact is, if you, as the CEO, aren't making enough, that's not the fault of the employees. Have a look at the appeal and quality of your products and the store conditions. The lowest of the rung shouldn't be the ones copping unemployment because someone on top is doing a crap job.

If online retailers are taking business away from "Brick-and-mortar" stores, the only possible solution is to join the ranks of other online retailers and offer customers an online experience as well as an offline one. That’s the only way to compete with them, and succeed.

David Jones and Myer are actually freaking out about the loss of customers in their department stores. Their solution is to offer a "money can't buy" experience: Myer wants to introduce dentist and weight loss clinics and free breast screenings. David Jones is planning on keeping their stores open for 24 hours because god forbid, I really need those Sass and Bide jeans at 3:47am and I have to know what that 24 hour in-store experience is like.

NO, DAVID JONES. JUST NO.

If they're really scared of losing business, instead of objecting point blank to having any kind of online presence, they should embrace the power of the internet and promote their brand online. And having a Facebook and Twitter account is just not enough any more. In store shopping experiences are important, yes, but so are online experiences. ASOS isn’t just any online store: They style shoots, have their own online magazine, get fashion editors to pick out their favourite must have items, and show consumers how to dress in season.

The reason why Sportsgirl is such a thriving business is because its online presence has been nurtured so well that it can compete with the likes of ASOS, Forever21 and Urban Outfitters. It uses lookbooks to style and sell their clothes. They constantly collaborate with bloggers and consumers by having giveaways, which are announced through their Twitter and Facebook accounts. Sportsgirl works because it becomes more than just another online store. Its collaborations and interactivity with consumers creates a platform that well exceeds a “money can’t buy” experience that stores like Myer and David Jones are trying to achieve. No one actually cares about launch parties where only Australia's very rich industry VIPs are invited to, but they do care about how to incorporate this season’s looks into their daily wardrobe.

In short, retailers need to stop being so elitist and old fashion. If you can’t beat them, join them. If you’re still adamant that you can beat online retail businesses without joining the virtual shopping revolution, then I’m sorry, you deserve to go bankrupt.

These boots are made for walking

Well it certainly has been an epically long time since I've written anything on here. I've been devoid of a laptop because my laptop charger had died on me and it took a week to get a replacement. I could have accessed the blog on my parents PC but it is so damn slow.

Not much has been happening, except I've been watching Hot Fuzz practically everyday (awesome), if not then at least some kind of Simon Pegg related thing. I just looked at my google reader account. 73 blog entries I have to read! That's crazy!

My parents are like so going to China in two days. WOO. I hope they bring me back a really good and fluffy bathrobe thing. That's all I want. And no, there will be no parties! I'm not the type to throw parties. I've got dogs. And a brother I have to feed for three weeks. It's not all that awesome. Plus, you know, don't like being a drunken slag in front of people I'm related to. It makes me feel naked.

One thing I do want to share with y'all is these new boots I just bought from asos. My friend from work introduced me to asos and it's literally awesome. I was lusting after a pair of Opening Ceremony clog boots for ages but obviously I can't afford or fathom spending so much money on shoes. I was browsing asos and I found these babies. Sure, they aren't exactly like the Opening Ceremony ones, but they sure are wonderful. They were also $100 cheaper so bonus! Check out my skillful leg work:

Boots by Kurt Geiger, bought from asos.com
Jeans by Cotton On

The only weird thing with these is the show laces. I don't have a photo, but the shoe laces are fucking long. I don't know why. I can't even tie them properly without looking like a clown so I've tucked the laces inside the shoes. That only works for photos though. I wore them out to dinner and the shoe laces started spilling out of the boots.

Regardless, I love them! I bought them a size bigger than what I normally wear since it really is better to have the shoe a bit bigger than a bit smaller when you're buying from the web. And with boots, you can chuck in some insoles and thick socks to balance things out.

Anyway, that's really all I want to say. I might write some more tomorrow. Who knows! In the meantime, have a good night!

Camera help!

OH DILEMMA!

Seriously, though, I actually have a bit of an issue and I would very much like any kind of Diana/Holga/SLR/Vintage camera buyer's help. I'm thinking of buying a Diana camera but I'm concerned about the cost of film and the cost of printing. I was looking at cameras on ebay and they cost roughly around the $50-$80 mark (which isn't bad, considering it's "free shipping"). But I just don't know if it's actually cheaper to buy them from an op shop (and that's only IF they have any in stock).

Then there's the issue of what kind of film to buy. I've found a place around Carlton that sells 120 film and that's all cool, but it also depends on where the film gets developed. Plus, I want to know if you can use 35 film in the 120 film (I'm assuming that's a big fucking no but I need to ask anyway).

My dilemma is, do I buy a Diana that uses 35 film and costs around $68, or a holga that uses 120 film and costs around $52?

Honour

Clara felt her ears burn. Her eyebrows knotted. Her jaw clamped. Her fingers threatened to snap in half the body of the cheap blue biro that was in her sweaty hands.

“... A cardigan is clearly a top,” leered the man. “They’re not pants, are they?”

“Yes, but they are not part of the deal,” Clara said, as calmly as she could.

“Well, that’s obviously misleading! This is false advertising,” said the woman dramatically.

“You need to honour this deal with the cardigan.”

Clara surveyed her antagonists, her mind sighing and wondering if the fuss was even worth it. They were both overbearing, self-important individuals who were all too accustomed to having someone shove their throats with a silver spoon. They were spoilt brats who have grown up thinking they can get whatever they want just by kicking up a fuss. They were, simply, utter arse holes.

He was the type who covered his steroid-charged biceps with stupid tattoos, probably to overcompensate for the lack of width and length his flaccid penis possessed. He looked like a gorilla wearing a white tank top. From the embellished trucker hat on his giant head, down to his scummy grey thongs on his fat hairy feet, everything about him screamed “big skull, tiny brain”. She was the type who always had a “thing” for over-bulky men with tiny wangs and usually (but not always) enjoyed a fuck or two with the man’s best friend. Dark hair and orange fake tan, her voice was nasally and she always over emphasised her “s” and “th” sounds. Clara wanted to throw the store’s calculator at their faces, and maybe even throw in a stanley knife or two. Or jab her biro into their eyes.

Whatever was easiest and most painful.

“Other customers have never complained that they were misled by these signs. I am very sorry that you think that they are misleading, but I can’t sell this cardigan and this singlet for thirty dollars. The cardigan itself is already thirty,” said Clara.

“Are you calling us stupid?” growled the man.

“No, not at all. I’m just saying that I’ve never had other customers complain about this before,” said Clara.

“I want you to call centre management right now. We are not going to leave until centre management removes these misleading signs. This is absolutely ridiculous. We are in the right. You really should be honouring this deal,” said the woman, glaring at Clara.

Clara sighed. With dread, she picked up the phone and dialed the number. Anger pulsed through her body in big doses. Her hands were trembling. The couple looked at each other smugly, clearly impressed that they’ve terrified Clara to a submissive, trembling mess. The man placed his tattooed arm tightly around the woman’s waist and kissed her orange face, while her heavily-lined eyes glowed proudly, affectionately rubbing the man’s strategically-carved stubble.

Clara wasn’t going to let them win.

“Security, Roger speaking. What’s the problem?”

*This is my attempt to write a short story. It is clearly inspired by recent events involving annoying people I've met through my time in retail. The ending is totally lame, and it never happened. I guess this is what people call "based on real events". I hope it was ok.

Rate my day

Once again, the lovely lasses over at People are Just People want us to rate our days, and I shall do exactly that! I have to say, I can't urge you enough to participate in these activities. It's fun, and interesting to read how people respond to each topic.

So I woke up at 9:30am instead of the 8am I set my alarm for (4/10, annoyed that I've wasted my day, but overall refreshed). I contemplated breakfast, but launched into some vegan cupcake baking while The Circle played in the background (8/10, Yumi Stynes is so cool). The cupcakes come out, with most of them stuck to the tin (2/10, epically annoyed as I did spray the tins with oil).

Yumi Stynes

Then Bel and her sister came over to help with my lolly bags (8/10, excited). Bel and I gossiped about work (2/10, infuriated by my manager's attack on my service skills) while Sam sifted through my hard drive and started watching The IT Crowd (8/10, season three, good laughs). Bel and Sam finish packing the lolly bags while I put the final batch of muffins in the oven (8/10, proud). Bel and Sam go home and I make myself some steamed prawn dumplings and salad (9/10, healthy and tasty). Mum calls, asking me to defrost some food. It's 3pm, I'm nervous because I start work at 4pm. I get a message from work, I start work at 5:30pm instead of 4pm (5/10, relieved I don't have to rush and able to sneak in a shower, annoyed at losing money).

DSC04856

I hop in the shower and find a rash building on my thigh: I've been bitten my some kind of tiny insect (3/10, slightly alarmed, itchy and a bit curious). I get out of the shower, and dress in a hurry: "plaid" shirt (buttoned up to the top), navy woolen vest, purple jeans (homage to Emma Roberts in Wild Child, even though her jeans were pink), and faux tortoise shell glasses (8/10, . felt pleased with my appearance. I also want a bow tie).

Emma Roberts

Head off to work, decided to make macaroons tomorrow (9/10, fucking excited). Start work, I find out it's just me and Matt working (7/10, I like Matt, and I'm so glad I'm not working with authority people). Manager stressed the importance of customer service (4/10, sick and tired of hearing this). Worked (2/1o, bored). Then my partner came to visit me and said hi, showed me the goodies he bought: a vest and shirt for my 21st, and a xbox controller so I can play Tekken 6 with him (10/10, I miss him and I can't wait to play Tekken 6).

I want to play as the panda

Cash up, go home, eat food (7/10), facemail my partner (10/10), watch some IT Crowd (10/10), sitting in bed, cuddling my hot water bottle (10/10).

So that's my day. It's super dull *smiley face*

Wish List

I'm procrastinating here. I'm sitting on my bed, nomming on some friendship rings. I'm meant to vacuum the house. Lame. So instead, I'm thinking about all the films I want to watch and what new clothes I want. I've been really into jackets lately, which is terrible, because jackets are expensive as. Here's one from Forever New that I quite like:

I wouldn't wear it the way it's been styled here. In fact, I don't know what I would wear it with. But it's just so nice. I should try it on. Who knows what it would look like. I'd probably go for some kind of checked shirt, buttoned up high, with some jeans and nice shoes. Boots or flats.

Another item I want is this Evil Twin shirt from General Pants:

I saw it in Frankie (yes, Tegan Quin was modelling it) and I really like it. I just want to try it on in a larger size to see how that looks. I'm excited by this one because it can be worn with leggings or some nice stockings and boots. I just really like the sleeves. But $79.95? I don't know if that's worth it.

Maybe I should think about this while I vacuum?

monty and moo moo

I went dress shopping! And I found a dress that is very suitable for my 21st birthday. I went shopping with Susie and we went to this place on Brunswick Street called Sheila Vintage and it was lovely. I asked the wonderful sales lady for some help and she got me to try on all these dress. I eventually settled for this pink lace drop waist dress. It's actually a dress from the eighties but it definitely fits. Daisy would be proud. I will post up some photos later.

Afterwards, my partner and I had dinner at this Thai place called Thai City and it was so tasty! We were so full that we had to scrap plans to eat ice cream. We ended up walking all the way back to his house. On the way, we walked down Brunswick Street, and I swear, it is the coolest street ever. I want to spend a day there shopping. There are so many places to shop and eat it's insane. Plus, it'd be perfect for a little project Susie's involved with. I'm not sure how much I can say about it, but it's exciting, and I've got some awesome ideas for her!

Anyway, so we ate at Thai City. Well, here are some photos!

Tom Yum soup. We actually ordered the Tom Kai Ga, which is like a coconut rich chicken soup. I was so excited when they gave us the right soup that I forgot to take a photo. I have to say, heaps of places think that Tom Kai Ga is just tom yum soup with coconut milk in it. It isn't! But you have to try it yourself. So good!

On a completely polar tangent, I'm going out tonight and I don't know what to wear. I need something that looks class at an upper class restaurant, but also casual enough to go clubbing. I'm not one to frequent the clubs, but I'm excited to go dancing and seeing my friends. I just don't know what to wear. I almost bought something to wear but when you think about it, it's not worth it. I've already spent a lot of money this week as it is (new parka and boots), plus X-ray costs (I've got wisdom teeth that need to come out), and the deposit for my 21st. It's all hectic, but I'll be working heaps this weekend, and so I'm hoping for a big pay check next week.

Anyway, that's it for now! I hope you guys have a good friday night.

You ain't never gonna change

I have foolishly, foolishly imposed a "no new clothes for two months" ban on myself after buying a new dress and denim shorts today. I then foolishly went on the Sportsgirl website and I see so many things I want, although it's not the clothes I want, just some accessories. They have these leopard print stockings that I want desperately want. Plus these gems:

Anyway, I guess I'll have to wait maybe two weeks or something. These are the shorts I got today from General Pants co:

I saw this top and I thought about trying it on but judging by the price tag ($69.95), I thought I'd stop myself.

I hope my fat ass can hustle up some gatorade... whatever that means

Oh man this year is going to be FIERCE!

During my trip to Singapore and Malaysia I've had smalls bursts of inspiration to do all sorts of things. First semester, I am going to do a screenwriting course. I hope it will help improve my script writing ability, and possibly help me churn out some awesome ideas for a script. At the moment, I want to write a zombie comedy (zombcom?). I don't know what the story line is going to be, but I have a few characters that I definitely want to use. I need to nut this out a bit more, but hopefully, it turns out to be awesome.

Another thing I want to pursue is documentary. After producing/directing one for uni, I feel like I really want to do it. There is so much in our world, so many stories that need to be told or information that needs to get out there. After going to Malaysia and immersing myself with all sorts of people, I really want to make documentaries that explore culture and people, possibly geared in the direction of death, like funerals and mourning. It's all very vague right now, but I have a team already confirmed and willing to help me, so I'm feeling very inspired.

This then leads to work placement. I officially cannot graduate until I complete 80 hours of work in my field. This desire to make documentaries makes me want to crew for doco makers, learn how the professionals do it, plus just see what other stories people are interested in and learn about how to film under pressure.

Now onto a totally different topic, I am soooo going to wear lipstick this year. I bought this baby in Malaysia:

It's anna sui, number 350 in the matte version. I think it's awesome and looks good on me (the photo doesn't do the lipstick any favours). I'm very excited about this.

So yeah. 2010 is going to be FIERCE!!

Singapore, part one

I am finally back from my holiday. I had all these amazing plans to blog each day to show everyone the food I got to eat and all the things I buy and the places I visit, but I never did any of it. So right here, I'm going to post some of the photos of the food I got to eat and places I visited. My new clothes will have to wait.

One thing I do have to say is that I found Topshop awesome but expensive. I was too afraid to try on anything because it's so expensive. I mean, judging by what I read on wikipedia, I don't think Topshop would decrease in profit if it reduced its prices, since it refuses to join the Ethical trading Initiative. But on a different level, just stop exploiting workers!

Anyway, here are the photos:

Yummy yummy satay. The peanut sauce it comes with is so much sweeter, but delicious nevertheless.

I don't know what this is but it was yummy, especially with the sambal sauce

Kaya toast with eggs. Best breakfast EVER.

Me, drinking coconut juice!

This is the shopping market in Bugis. I bought lots of things here. Actually, just a pair of ankle boots. But I could have bought heaps of stuff here. I totally could have.

Green tea glutinous rice roll with mango and some black glutinous rice. So good and refreshing!!

Some other amazing greasy concoction

Bandung drink. Tastes like musk sticks. Yummy!

Steamed rice cakes with chilli oil and preserved radishes: so amazing but they're very filling and we order 8 of these. So tasty though!

Mee Goreng, also brilliant!

doof doof doof

Oh Oh Oh!!!

There's this song that we play at work that I really really like. Normally I don't like the music they play at work because a lot of it is stupid dance music. But this particular song just reminded me of Placebo in a weird way, like if Placebo was feeling a bit cheerful, that's what they'd make. But of course, my work would NEVER play Placebo, as awesome as they are. (Just a side note, I'm going to see Placebo in Feb. Massively stoked).

So I've spent many many nights trying to find what song this was and came to no avail. Then I asked someone at work. And this is, my friend, was the song:

Working in retail has really killed any sort of excitement I reserved for sale time. In the past, I was an avid supporter of sales. I remember when I was 15 and I went into Myer (an Australian department store) and bought this grey and black asymmetric dress for $21 and a pair of yellow Converse Chuck Taylors for $49. That was a sweet sale time experience.

Now, sale time just means rude customers, messy tables, regional managers obsessed with stock, and shit rack up. Working in retail has drained out any possible desire to participate in sales. You just don't care enough to really be part of it. After working a tiring shift, all you want to do is sit and look outside. It's soul draining.

Although, I did buy a pair of heels. And they were originally $149.95 and were reduced to $99.95 (I had to have them).

This got me thinking: I really believe that sale items are only worth it when you buy quality items. So good quality shoes, nice bags and wallets, facial products, quality coats and jeans - all these things that would normally cost you a fortune are worth buying on sale because they are quality, and they will last.

So if you want your money to be worth all the sale time frenzy, go buy good quality items.

Baby, it's cold outside...

Guess what kind of awesomeness I snapped up yesterday at the Boxing Day sale? While I did work about 11hrs yesterday, I did manage to participate in the sale. And the best thing was, I didn't even pay for it. I got a pair of shoes as a gift. It was supposed to be a joke and she said I could return the shoes if I wanted. So I did. I returned them for a credit note. All $99.95. That's an expensive joke.

Anyway, on my break yesterday, I was walking past my favourite shoe store and found that the shoes I have been dreaming about for months has gone on sale. From $149.95 to...

...$99.95!!

Yeah. That's right. Fuck. Yeah. I'm so wearing them to uni when it's cold. I'm gonna wear dresses and stockings and a warm coats and scarves and have nice eye make up on. Yeah. That's right. Here's a photo:

What would Charlotte wear? #2

My new top! I really like it. It goes so well with my high waisted shorts.

Although, to be honest, I wouldn't know what else it would work with. Suggestions?

Also, my lens is really dirty.

What would Charlotte do?

My dear pal Susie is in England right now and has brought my attention to Urban Outfitters. I so want it to be winter right now...
